Liptov is, as a result of its great location, countless possibilities for hiking, cycling, summer and winter sports as well as its unique natural beauty, one of the most visited regions in Slovakia.
Liptov
Liptov is situated in the north of Slovakia, occupying an area of more than 2000 km2.
With its north-east part -
High Tatras,
West Tatras and
Chočské Mountains, Liptov touches the state border with Poland, in the east it is surrounded by Popradská Basin, the west part of Liptov is surrounded by the ridge of the
Veľká Fatra Mountains, and the south of Liptov is surrounded by the ridge of the
Low Tatras. Through the Liptov region flows the longest Slovak river - the river
Váh (43,5 km).
Hiking and cycling in Liptov
Tourists can choose from a wide range of hiking trails of varying difficulty. The trails start in villages, municipalities or tourist centres and are colour-marked, depending on their difficulty.
The most visited trails are the trails through the ridges of surrounding mountains as well as climbing to famous view-points, such as
Ďumbier, Poludnica or
Veľký Choč.
A suitable walking tour for families with children is the one from Žiarska to Žiarska chalet towards Šarafiový Waterfall, or he passes through
Prosiecka and
Kvačianska Valleys (
water mills in Oblazy are a great experience for adults as well as for children).
In Liptov, there are great possibilities for cycling fans, too. The trails around
Liptovská Mara water reservoir, or through
Demänovská Valley are quite an experience. Bicycle rentals are almost everywhere. You can go cycling all by yourself or you can arrange to have an experienced instructor.

Važecká Cave, whose clear-white stalactite decoration gives it the appearance of a fairy-land, were declared national natural landmarks.
Swimming and water sports in Liptov
Liptov, with a number of rivers, streams and hot mineral springs, offers many possibilities for swimming and water sports.
Liptovská Mara water reservoir is one of the most visited, there are excellent conditions for rafting on the river
Váh and its tributary
Belá.
Vrbické pleso Mountain Lake is the result of glacier activity in this area.
You can go swimming or take a bath in thermal spas such as
Bešeňová,
Tatralandia,
Liptovský Ján or at
Spa Lúčky, near which you can see the famous
Lúčanský waterfall or
Lúčanské travertines.
In
Western Funpark in Tatralandia you have a chance to witness a train robbery or you can try panning for gold.
Cultural and historical sights of Liptov
Liptov is also famous for its number of cultural and historical sights, the most interesting are the ruins of
Likava Castle, the ruins of
Liptov Castle, wooden articular church of the Holy Cross, folk buildings from the 1st half of the 19th century in
Oblazy, where you can also see old water mills.
Unique examples of folk architecture are in
Vlkolínec, an open-air museum which is also listed on the
UNESCO World Heritage List. Right above the Liptovská Mara water reservoir, is the famous
Archaeological open-air museum of Celtic culture in Havránok. The
open-air museum of Liptov Village in Pribylina depicts the life of people in this region in the 19th and 20th centuries, on weekends there is a regular program for children as well as for adults.
In the village of
Východná the famous
Východná folk festival is held, once a year, always on the first weekend of July.
